Having fully recharged from delivering Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last year, director David Yates has chosen a re-imagining of the Tarzan series as his next project. And if he has his way, Alexander Skarsgard and Samuel L. Jackson will soon be heading to the jungle with him.
While other actors like Tom Hardy and Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam were, and possibly still are, in the running, Variety has reported that True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard is Yates’ top pick to play the loin-clothed ape man originally created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912.
The film’s plot finds Tarzan, years after having been reconnected with Victorian society, tasked by the Queen herself to investigate the bloody dealings of a Congolese warlord. Tarzan will be joined by mercenary George Washington Williams, a US Civil War veteran who longs to redeem himself after his part in the massacre of thousands of Native Americans back home. Jackson is currently being sought to play the Williams role.
Tarzan is set to film next summer with a 2014 release.
