Last year’s The Muppets was a triumphant return to form for the beloved cloth characters, with much of the film’s success being placed squarely on the shoulders of writer and star Jason Segel.

However, Segel said many months ago that he would not be returning to the next Muppets film. And while Modern Family’s Ty Burrell has already been cast in a supporting role as a bumbling inspector, many wondered who could possibly anchor another adventure with Kermit and Co.

An answer came earlier this week when The Hollywood Reporter revealed that notorious British comedian Ricky Gervais was in talks to take on a lead part.

While decidedly “adult” and controversial in his humor, Gervais is no stranger to Jim Henson’s creations. In 2009 he appeared in two Sesame Street segments and was even joined by Elmo during a live performance at Carnegie Hall.

Filming is slated to begin in January 2013.
