WWE Rewind: WrestleMania III Makes WWE History

March 15, 2013

The day was March 29, 1987. The city was Pontiac, Michigan. The venue was the Silverdome. 93,173 screaming fans were in attendance, a new indoor record for a sporting event. With its celebrities and WWE Superstars, WrestleMania III was probably the most historic of all the 28 installments of the PPV event.

Aretha Franklin kicked it off with a soul-shattering rendition of “America the Beautiful.” It was then followed by a slew of amazing matches. The best of the preliminary bunch involved the bitter rivalry between “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Steamboat defeated Savage to claim the Intercontinental Title.

The main event pitted two of the biggest names in the history of the sports entertainment, perhaps the most anticipated matchup of all time: Hulk Hogan took on Andre the Giant, for the World Heavyweight Championship. The two legends gave it their all and the battle ended when Hogan was able to lift the 520 lbs. Andre and slam him down. He followed with his trademark leg drop and get the win to retain his championship.
