Actress Ming-Na is just as excited about the debut of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D as we are! She shares her thoughts on the new series and what viewers can expect.
What surprises can we expect from the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D premiere?
Ming-Na: Although everyone now knows that Agent Coulson lives, that still remains the biggest surprise. Now if I told you the other surprises, then it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore! I will say that there will be humor, action and our audience will have a great time! It’s also fun for the entire family. I can’t wait to watch every week with mine!
Tell us about working with the brilliance that is creator Joss Whedon?
MN: I have been a fan of Joss Whedon’s work for a while, but after having the great opportunity to work with him, I am now a fan of the MAN! He promotes a fun work environment and has this blend of being laid back yet very focused. He knows what shots he needs to get and once he gets it, he moves on. He is a genius, a leader, an amazing story teller and a goof. Joss is a rock star!
Tell us about your character Melinda May? Who is she at her core?
MN: Agent May is known as the “Calvary” because she has some serious skills in combat. She’s also highly trained as a pilot and weapons expert, although she prefers to take down the bad guys with her martial arts skills. She’s very confident and fearless in her abilities as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but there’s a definite vulnerability at her core. Something happened to her that made her turn away from being a field agent to one that works at a desk job. This vulnerability as well as the secret regarding her past makes her mysterious and fun to play.
Tell us about how it has been working with your very talented fellow cast members?
MN: It’s insane how quickly the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast has bonded! We make each other laugh all the time, but when it’s time to work, we’re all very supportive and focused. Everyone brings something special to the dynamic of the group, very much like the team Agent Coulson put together. Only we giggle more.
You voiced Mulan, one of Disney’s most beloved characters. Who was your favorite character growing up?
MN: I watched a ton of cartoons as a child. I remember loving “The Jetsons” because it was futuristic. I also loved anime and even had a crush on one character named “Lance.” When Disney came out with “The Little Mermaid,” I absolutely loved Ariel because she was determined to be true to herself and follow her heart. That’s Mulan’s message too.
Will we see any interaction with the superheroes themselves on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D?
MN: Never say never! We really don’t know, but that’s the excitement of doing a television show with amazing Marvel characters. They can always pop up in potential storylines in future episodes. The focus of the show will always be about the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but the possibility is definitely there for superheroes. Afterall, that’s the world of Marvel!
Of all the amazing superheroes in the Marvel universe, who is your all-time favorite?
MN: I always loved The Hulk because I’ve always been intrigued with the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde aspect of human nature. We all have a Hulk in us that erupts when things get to be too much. How far we go with that anger is what separates the civilized from the monsters.
You are stranded on a desert island, which of the hunks from the Marvel’s Avengers movie would you want to be with you?
MN: DUH, THOR of course! Or is it Chris Hemsworth that’s swaying my opinion…
You can catch Ming-Na as Melinda May on the premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on Tuesday, September 24th at 8pm ET/ 7pm PT on ABC.
