A group of teenagers in the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital form lasting friendships in Fox’s new drama Red Band Society, premiering Wednesday, September 17 at 9/8c on FOX. Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters, 666 Park Avenue) plays Dr. Jack McAndrew. He spoke with DIRECTV about his fellow cast members, his hopes for the show, and what he wants people to take away after watching.
You are back on TV with Red Band Society! What is special about this show?
What isn’t special about this show? I think this is really a unique show. The script was fantastic. This is a show that takes place from another point of view, in terms of medical shows. This is taking on the place of the patient’s point of view—and they’re kids, at that. So, it’s really this sort of life affirming, inspiring, uplifting and educational show that I think is bigger than us. And it’s something unique and something that I hope will stay around for a long time.
How is it working with such a young cast? Do they keep the set lively?
It’s the first time that I’ve been the “adult on the show” and these kids are fantastic. [It’s a] sort of symbiotic relationship that’s happening between Octavia [Spencer], the kids, and myself. You know, we are sort of teaching them about the ropes and all that stuff, kind of the first thing. And they’re teaching us all about Twitter, Instagram, and all the apps. You know, keeping us young, fresh. It’s great. It’s so much fun.
You worked with Oscar winner Sally Field and now Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. What is it like working with these talented ladies?
I feel real lucky and again, this goes back to being an actor and getting to work with such brilliant actresses and actors. It’s like going to acting school every day. And you know, just really blessed to have Mr. Spielberg producing the show and obviously, looking across at Octavia every day is something that I’m learning and growing from.
What do you hope people take away from Red Band Society?
I hope people take away an appreciation for life, as cheesy as that sounds. It’s fleeting and it can be hard, and it can be easy. But you watch this show, it’s one of those where you take that second, and you appreciate everything you got. You give your family member a nice hug and enjoy that happy feeling you have after you watch it.
When you have time what is your favorite TV guilty pleasure?
Ooh, favorite TV guilty, GUILTY pleasure? Ooh, I just finished Bachelor In Paradise and I gotta be honest, it was epic. I got all the kids involved in it, we’re all watching it. It was just OUTSTANDING television to be honest with you.
