We all have had a teacher who’s shaped us, inspired us and whom we can credit with having empowered us to become who we are today. Teach, Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim’s third documentary on the subject of education in America, asks the question, “What does it take to be a teacher?” Hosted and narrated by Oscar-nominee Queen Latifah, Teach offers a rare glimpse inside four public school classrooms and invites us to follow the struggles and triumphs of America’s education system through the eyes of its most essential resource: teachers.
Inspired by Teach and as part of our commitment to K-12 schools and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, DIRECTV recently joined forces with Pivot‘s social action platform TakePart to recognize outstanding math teachers.
Students and former students were invited to tell the world about their favorite teacher through TakePart’s Teacher Stories contest. The five winning teachers were awarded with a free year of DIRECTV, and a $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card to use on math projects or a math-related field trip.
One of the winners, Joan Colalilo, wrote a guest blog on our DIRECTV GOES TO SCHOOL website. Take a look at her inspiring story here.
