Michael Chiklis is arguably best known for playing LAPD Detective Vic Mackey on the legendary FX drama, The Shield. His relationship with FX continues with his latest role as strongman Dell Toledo on American Horror Story: Freak Show. Michael spoke with DIRECTV about his new role, The Shield, and his TV guilty pleasures.
What have you enjoyed most about playing Dell?
The emotional range of the character. Dell is volatile, dangerous, and complex. I feel like I’m playing an animal that’s wounded, cornered, and afraid.
What made you want to join the AHS: Freak Show cast?
Ryan Murphy, the artistic merits of the show, and this incredible cast!
And how about your co-stars? What is it like working with such fantastic actresses such as Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett?
An absolute pleasure. AHS is one of the most talent-filled casts in television history. I’m pretty lucky to be surrounded by these incredible women.
We were so fond of The Shield. What did you love most about doing that show?
My father always said, “A place is only as good as the people who are there.” He was right. The cast, crew, writers, and network were amazing collaborators and most of all, my friends. I miss spending time with them all. That and the full on, Wild West way we shot the show! Gorilla film making on the hairy edge! What a rush!
When you have time, what TV guilty pleasures do you like to watch?
There’s a lot of great television out there these days. I love House Of Cards, Game Of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, and Modern Family. I’m addicted to sports—all Boston teams. And as far as guilt is concerned, I have none but if anything gives me any pangs in my stomach it would be Chopped on the Food Network!
American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on FX (Ch. 248).
