NFL Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders is one of the busiest men in America. A single father raising 10 children (five of his own, five living with him), Sanders is the cofounder and football coach of Prime Prep Academy charter school. Viewers now have a candid view into Sanders’s life with Deion’s Family Playbook, which airs Saturdays at 9/8c on OWN (Ch. 279). The gridiron legend spoke with DIRECTV about the series.
So, watching Deion’s Family Playbook, it’s clear that you like to inspire people. What inspires you?
Just seeing someone less fortunate without all the means and the resources to make it—and you give them a hand up, not just a hand out. And give them an opportunity to succeed in their dreams.
What do you want viewers to take away from Deion’s Family Playbook?
That family is real and family still exists. Love and affection, a father being present and not perfect, still exists.
One of the best things about the show is seeing your family sit down for meals together. What is your ideal family meal?
Chicken, probably. My kids love macaroni and cheese. Some type of rice. Probably black-eyed peas, cornbread, and sweet iced tea, of course. The kids love Sprite. That’s probably it. And probably cheesecake or chocolate cake with ice cream.
Do you think you could play in the league today with the new rules that benefit receivers?
Oh, of course, of course.
Do you think you could cover Calvin Johnson?
The question is could they deal with me, not could I deal with someone else.
The Deion’s Family Playbook season finale airs Saturday, December 20 at 9/8c on OWN (Ch. 279)
