EGOT-er Rita Moreno Talks Trophies, Spontaneity, and Miracles

February 10, 2015

Rita Moreno has accomplished a lot in her 83 years. And her latest role, in A Gift of Miracles (which airs Sunday, February 15 at 9/8c on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, Ch. 565) lets her play a character that similarly relishes in the joy of being busy. The showbiz veteran (known for her roles in Singin’ in the Rain, West Side Story, and The Electric Company) sat down with us to discuss living in the moment and how to mix Emmys into your decor.

Tell us about your latest film, A Gift of Miracles.
A Gift of Miracles is about a young woman who believes only in what is here and now and what she can see. The possibility of coincidence and things that happen for a reason simply don’t exist in her understanding. When events begin to take place in her life that have seemingly no explanation, she reacts with total confusion and an unwillingness to acknowledge what is taking place.

What did you like most about playing the character of Beverly?
Beverly, my character, is a woman who lives in the moment, very much like myself. So playing her was almost like playing hooky because I know her so well! She’s spontaneous and direct.

What do you want viewers to take away from A Gift of Miracles?
I’d like to think that the audience is left with a sense of the importance of allowing life to happen without so much deconstruction! Life is to be lived and accepted on its’ own terms.

You have starred in such classic films as Singin’ In the Rain and West Side Story. Of your many films, which has a special place in your heart?
West Side Story has a special place in my heart for every reason! It brought me a special kind of fame, which gave me worldwide celebrity and my very first professional awards — the Oscar and the Golden Globe. Amazing! Especially for a Latina actress at that time. It certainly helped me in joining the roster of an exceedingly exclusive club. I’m so honored.

You are a member of the EGOT club, having won Emmy, GRAMMY®, Oscar, and Tony awards. Where do you keep all of them?
The two Emmys, the two GRAMMY® awards, the Tony and the Oscar sit happily on a shelf in my living room, along with my grandson Justin’s soccer trophy, from when he was eight years old.

Don’t miss Rita in A Gift of Miracles Sunday, February 15 at 9/8c on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries (Ch. 565).
