Amira & Sam is a perfect nouveau romantic comedy with a twist. Here an American solider, Sam, (Martin Starr) returns from war and strikes up perhaps the most unlikely of romances—a whirlwind affair with an illegal immigrant named Amira who spends her days pedaling illegal DVDs. At the same time, Sam’s friend Charlie (The Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley) offers him an opportunity to make some potentially suspect money on Wall Street. How will Sam balance his matters of the heart—and of the law?
We talked with two of the film’s stars Martin Starr and Paul Wesley about their roles, their favorite romantic films, and the best dates they’ve ever been on.
What made you want to be a part of Amira & Sam?
Martin Starr: Writer and director Sean Mullen’s passion to tell this story.
This is Sean Mullin’s first feature film. What was it like working with him?
Paul Wesley: Sean was very open to improv and line changes on the day, which is always key, as far as I’m concerned. He trusted the actors he hired. He’s a very funny guy who has a lot of experience with the subject matter of the film, so I felt I was in good hands.
What do you think this film says about love?
PW: Well the obvious is that people who are seemingly polar opposites (in this case culturally) can make the most romantic of connections.
How was life on set? Did you bond with the other cast members?
MS: I’m very close with Dina. Paul and I are friends, and I love that I’ve gotten to run into him once every couple months.
Paul, what can you tell us about your character Charlie?
PW: Charlie is a Wall Street hedge fund manager who manages his clients’ money in a questionable fashion, so to speak. But he’s not the stereotypical bad guy. He has a lot of charm, and there’s a ton of justification in his mind for what he is doing. As far as he is concerned, the whole system is corrupt, and he’s simply a part of it. The audience, as I understand it, empathizes with him in a bizarre way.
This movie is all about love! What is the best date you have ever been on?
MS: Once I went to play laser tag on a date because the bowling alley we tried to go to wasn’t open. We did pretty well against all the 12-year-old kids. I don’t want to brag but we lost, by a lot.
What is the best romantic film you have ever seen?
MS: I don’t watch a lot of romantic movies but I remember loving Sleepless in Seattle and As Good As It Gets.
What your favorite rom-com?
PW: I’m not sure if it’s considered rom-com but I really loved Sixteen Candles as a kid. It holds great memories for me.
