Back in 2014, Christina Ricci thrilled viewers with her turn as a villainous, suspected axe murderess Lizzie Borden in the Lifetime Movie, Lizzie Borden Took an Axe. It was good. So good in fact that the network decided we all needed more of Ricci’s pitch-perfect performance as the iconic executioner—bringing her back for the series The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, premiering on April 5 at 10/9c.
This time, the story picks up after Lizzie’s trial as she tries to move on with her life in Falls River, Massachusetts. But without her father and stepmother, not everything will be easy. The state still is interested in Lizzie’s case, business isn’t exactly booming, and random bands of children are tormenting her by singing her signature song. We sat down with the beloved actress to discuss returning to the role and some of her favorite moments from her impressive career.
We are so excited for your return as Lizzie Borden! What can we expect from The Lizzie Borden Chronicles?
She’s a really fun character! She is outrageous and surprising. I have fun playing her.
Lizzie is an intriguing character. What do you like most about her?
I think that inside I am a bit rebellious, and Lizzie certainly misbehaves quite a bit on the show, so we have that in common.
You have worked with so many interesting actors and directors, from Cher to Tim Burton to Angelica Huston. What have you taken with you from these experiences?
I think that what I have learned most from all the fantastic people that I have worked with is how to carry yourself. How much grace goes with grace and that those people who are truly talented prove themselves through their work.
Many of your films have become beloved—The Addams Family, The Ice Storm, Now and Then, Buffalo 66, and Monster. Do you have a personal favorite?
I really love The Addams Family movies. I have such great memories of making those movies. They have meant so much in my life.
If a Lifetime movie was made about your life, what would the title be?
Ha ha. Such a hard question! Give me 20 more years, and I’ll have a title for you.
Don’t miss The Lizzie Borden Chronicles premiering on April 5 at 10/9c on Lifetime (Ch. 252)
