Comedian Jim Gaffigan is known for being the most lovable (and huggable) of comedians. His approachable doofy takes on everything from Hot Pockets to parenting have long charmed the masses, and now he’s bringing that attitude to TV Land. Jim based on the show on his real life, which has him living with this five kids and wife in a two-bedroom NYC apartment. We asked the comedian how his kids feel about the show and what’s he’s been eating lately.
How do your kids feel about the show? Do they understand it’s based on their lives?
Yes, they’ve been seeing tons of ads for the show in New York City, where we live, and they make occasional appearances in the show as actors. There are 5 kids on our show so occasionally our real ones step in. I think they’re excited and happy.
Why did you and your wife decide to stay in the 2-bedroom apartment? Are there any advantages to the tiny space?
We have moved now but we were only in that place because of financial and real estate inventory limitations of Manhattan. The advantage of a small place are that they’re all going to end up in my bed, kicking me, anyway.
Do you think any of your kids will follow in your comedic footsteps?
I don’t know but I’ve made it clear that they should feel no pressure to do so. The entertainment industry is not an industry I would wish on anyone.
What’s the best and worst bit of parenting advice you have received?
Worst bit of parenting advice: you’ll get used to the screaming. Best bit of advice: you’ll get used to the screaming.
Who is your favorite on-screen dad?
Ned Stark. He was the father of 6 children, I only have 5.
You’ve shown a love of many foods over there years, Hot Pockets most famously, what food are you currently obsessed with?
Avocados- it’s the cheese of vegetables.
Who are some of your favorite comedians of the moment?
Moshe Kasher, Kumail Nanjiani, Cameron Esposito, Jonah Ray, James Adomian, Morgan Murphy, Jena Friedman, Damien Lemon, Bonnie McFarlane, Hari Kondabolu, Joe Mande, Nick Thune, Ron Funches, Maria Bamford, Mike Lawrence, and Ian Bagg.
What TV shows do you watch when you have the time?
Game of Thrones, Bloodline, Broadchurch, True Detective, The Fall, and Top of the Lake.
Don’t miss The Jim Gaffigan Show premiering Wednesday, July 15 at 10/9c on TVLand (Ch. 304).
