We sat down with TV veteran Bonnie Somerville, one of the stars of the new CBS show, Code Black, to talk about the upcoming medical drama.
We are so happy to see you back on TV! Tell us what made you want to be a part of Code Black?
When I read the script I was absolutely blown away. I’d never read any medical drama that was this exciting, real, honest, and really told stories about the connections between people in the ER world quite this way. It was unlike any pilot script I’d read. Plus–having strong female leading women star in shows is exciting as an actress, and so refreshing.
What can you reveal about your character Christa Lorenson?
Dr. Lorenson lost a child to cancer, is divorced, and basically starting over in life and in her career at 40. She decides to give life another chance and use all that she learned and what she lost to help other people. She’s definitely out of her element, but strong enough to deal with it.
You are part of such an amazing cast, what is it like getting to work with this incredible group of actors?
I thank the universe every day for this job—and mostly for my cast mates. I have been such a fan of Marcia Gay Harden my whole career and working with someone you have looked up to and admired is a dream. Luis Guzmán is an absolute legend and one of the most generous people you’ll ever meet. We have all become a family and genuinely love each other. It really makes all the difference.
You have guest starred on some classic TV shows, including Friends and The OC. Any one role have a special place in your heart?
Mona from Friends will always be the special role for me—the show was such a juggernaut—and it changed my career. It opened so many doors for me and it was surreal being in it for that many episodes. To this day that show has so many fans, all over the world, and now being on Netflix there’s another huge wave of younger fans that recognize me and love the character. It was really amazing.
There are so many great TV shows out there; what do you enjoying watching in your spare time?
Game of Thrones, The Fall, Broadchurch, Sherlock, and Bloodline are my favorite shows right now. I cannot wait for more episodes. Just started Narcos, which I love, and I am a Bravo addict. I admit it. I watch ALL the housewives. Ladies of London may be the best one yet.
Don’t miss the series premiere of Code Black at 10/9c on September 30th.
