A longtime favorite on YouTube, Jay Leno’s Garage hit the broadcast airwaves as a two-hour special on CNBC last year, and is now back for a full season of episodes, Wednesdays at 10/9c. In the weekly series, the former host of The Tonight Show takes a look at some of his favorite cars and motorcycles, and invites us along for the ride. Leno was kind enough to join us for a quick Q&A.
Let’s talk about Jay Leno’s Garage. What made you want to do the show?
I have been doing Jay Leno’s Garage for years on YouTube and it did very well so I thought to myself, let’s bring it to broadcast.
Where did your love for cars start?
When I was a kid, you had only the car to escape your family! No iPhone, no Apple Watch…the car was it. I have been in love ever since.
Do you have a favorite car chase scene?
The French Connection has some amazing car chases, but I would say Bullitt is my favorite. Though, the greatest car movie of all time is Grand Prix by John Frankenheimer.
If you ever went on a Cannonball Run adventure, what celebrity would you want to be in the passenger seat next to you?
(Laughs) Well, I wouldn’t want to do a Cannonball Run because those things are kind of stupid to me. But, if I had to do one, I would want someone like Patrick Dempsey, who is a racecar driver and would be good to have alongside you on the road.
Finally, what is your dream car to drive—or have you driven them all?
A lot of times you buy the story. The story or emotional attachment plays such a factor when I pick a car to drive. I would say I won’t know until I drive it.
