Celebrity advertising executive Donny Deutsch has gained notoriety thanks to his myriad television appearances, including Morning Joe, The Apprentice, and the Today Show, among others. Now he’s taking on a rather different challenge, starring as a fictionalized version of himself in USA Network’s scripted series, Donny!, taking a more satirical look at wealth, media, and modern romance than we’ve seen in the past.
Deutsch joined us for a quick chat about his latest adventure in Donny!, his guilty TV pleasures, and his dream guest stars.
Tell us about Donny! What made you want to do the show?
I just love a new challenge! I have always been in content creation, whether it’s ads or the talk-show business, and I have always felt that if you want to do something—just go for it! Don’t be afraid to fail, just go for it!
After being on TV for years, what was it like to shoot a scripted show about your life?
This show has been much more personal than doing a talk show. This is something I created. This is a lampoon of my own life and you feel very exposed. It’s like giving birth to something wonderful. It’s very thrilling!
If you could do a crossover episode with another USA Network show, what would it be?
I would love to do something with Chrisley Knows Best. I think that would be very interesting.
If we were to take a peek at your DVR, what would we find? Any guilty TV pleasures?
You would find Scandal, Homeland…you would find Mr. Robot, The Affair, and [Last Week Tonight With] John Oliver.
Finally, who would you love to see guest star on the show?
Haha, that’s an easy one! Donald Trump for sure. He would bring the eyeballs and we would have a blast.
Don’t miss Donny!, Tuesdays at 10:30/9:30c on USA Network.
