At the young age of 20, singer, songwriter, and actress Christina Milian first hit the Top 40 with her 2001 hits “AM to PM” and “When You Look at Me”. 15 years, multiple albums, and several TV & film appearances later, she’s wrapping up her second season starring in her own reality show, Christina Milian Turned Up, as well as co-starring in the John Stamos comedy, Grandfathered. Turned Up looks at her professional and personal lives and all the complications that come along when the two overlap.
She connected with us to discuss the season finale, her advice for young performers, and the challenges of living life in public.
Can you tell us what viewers can expect as Season Two winds down?
From here on out it’s pretty much on the up and up. It shows me really coming into my own and how I multi-task and run my businesses. One business in particular is my clothing company, We Are Pop Culture, and how I decided to open up my own store rather than letting it just be an online company. In the process, I decide to do a huge grand opening, which also uses my music and shows the audience my music video for the first time. It also goes into the hurdles that it takes to actually put this event together. Some really cool family events. I can’t tell you, you will have to tune in! Of course, more drama between some members of my family.
Anything you think will particularly surprise us?
I think the drama that continues to escalate with my brother-in-law Richard and my sister’s boyfriend, Dom. It definitely surprised us when it all went down. All in all, we are all a work-in-progress and always try to fix things.
Surely it’s not easy living your life in the public through the lens of a reality show. What do you feel you’ve learned from doing the show so far?
I think what I’ve learned is it’s good to be vulnerable and as I watch myself I learned from my own mistakes that I have since moved on from. I’ve learned the realest you can be, the better.
What advice would you offer an aspiring young performer? Anything you wish someone had told you when you were first starting out?
Be fearless and don’t be afraid to speak up for what you want. Try new things even when people say you can’t do it. If you have a passion for it, then go for it. Don’t ever get in the way of yourself.
Obviously the show keeps you plenty busy, but are there any other projects you might be working on for music, TV, or film that you can tell us about?
Shooting Grandfathered has me pretty busy. It’s such a fun show and I’m glad that the audience really loves it. In the new year, I’m going to present the new look for my wine company Viva Diva Wines, so I will be focused on rebranding it and getting into more markets. We just got distribution in California, which makes me really happy. Everyone loves it! I live in LA, so now I can go pick up my wine locally. I just dropped my EP, 4U, and I have one more music video I’m going to release at the end of the year. Lastly, but exciting as well, I’m going back in the studio to start recording a full album.
What do you like to do in your downtime? Any shows you’re currently binge-watching?
In my downtime, I like to hang out with my daughter and my family and just do regular things like watch TV, go places, and find special events that we can do together. I’m really having fun right now watching shows like 90 Day Fiancé and of course shows like Real Housewives are always fun.
