Harry Hamlin has played a variety of characters in film and TV for over three decades, earning awards recognition for many of them, including Movie Movie, L.A. Law, and Mad Men. He joined us to discuss his impressive career and his two-episode guest appearance on the CBS comedy, Mom, which begins tonight, Jan. 14, at 9/8c.
Can you tell us a bit about your character Fred on Mom?
I play Fred who is Anna Faris’ ex-husband’s fiancé’s father. I’m a wealthy car dealer who has country club memberships and lots of dough; hence, I’m very attractive to the family.
How did your guest appearance come about?
[Series co-creator] Chuck Lorre called me at home and asked if I’d be interested. Chuck Lorre is a god of comedy and I didn’t hesitate.
Any chance we’ll see Fred return to the series?
There’s always a chance that I’ll be back! Stay tuned!
You’ve had such an interesting career playing a variety of characters, from Clash of the Titans, to L.A. Law, to Mad Men, and many others. Is there one particular role or experience that stands out for you?
They say that your first starring role in a movie will be your favorite and I think they might be on to something…whoever “they” are. My first big role was in the Stanley Donen spoof, Movie Movie, for which I received a Golden Globe nomination. I think very fondly about that. Otherwise, I have good thoughts about Dog in Curb Your Enthusiasm and, of course, Perseus in Clash of the Titans.
Can you tell us about any other upcoming projects you’re working on?
I’m on my way to Park City for the premiere of my latest film, Director’s Cut, which will open Slamdance. I also have the film, Defrost, at Sundance…the first live-action, virtual reality serialized feature that can only be seen on VR headsets! Exciting!
