We sat down with New Girl stars Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield to chat about the current season and find out what they’re up to while Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is out on jury duty. Enjoy our quick interview and Instagram videos below, catch up On Demand and with DIRECTV Everywhere, and watch new episodes Tuesdays at 8/7c on FOX.
What was it like to direct an episode this season?
I was able to work with Bill Burr and it was really fun to do. It was an episode where Zooey wasn’t going to be there, so I felt that was a good first episode to direct because it was already not going to feel as normal without her, so I figured it was a good time to direct and normalize as much as possible.
What can we expect in the next few episodes while Jess is out on jury duty?
We will keep bringing the laughs. We have some great guest stars coming in. I think the season has been really funny. You have New Girl kind of going back to its roots and getting as many laughs as it can. It has some heart in it, but it’s not a heavy relationship show, so we bring the comedy whenever possible.
After five years working together, what is life like on set?
We are so fortunate, a lot of TV doesn’t make it five years anymore and we have now been doing this for almost 100 episodes, five days a week, and we have spent a lot of time together. And we all enjoy spending that time together. And it shows! We all get along and there are a lot of inside jokes that don’t make it on to the show because they are too weird!
You mentioned the 100th episode is coming up. What did you do as a cast to celebrate?
We had a big party! Gary Newman and Dana Walden who run FOX and who picked this show from 20th Century Fox threw as a huge party with all of the executives and all the crew and it was nice experience.
So what kind of high jinks do you get into while Jess is out for jury duty?
We got into a lot of Megan Fox jinks! So Megan comes in for a few episodes while Zooey is gone, she sublets the apartment, and it’s a funny different direction for the show. It gives all the characters the opportunity to behave a little differently and react a little differently.
The show always features such great guest stars—who have you really enjoyed having on?
We just had Peter Gallagher come on and he played my dad and it was such a great TV moment for me. I played the younger version of him (Sandy Cohen) on The OC years ago and it was fantastic to have him come on and do the show.
If you could do a crossover episode with any other FOX show, what would it be?
It would be fun to do The Simpsons! New Girl visits Springfield. I would watch that.
