We sat down with Brandon Jay McLaren to talk about his new show Slasher, Chiller’s first original series. The show, which has been described as a mystery/horror/thriller is perfect for fans of Friday the 13th, and McLaren can’t wait for viewers to sink their teeth into all the action. Stream episodes one and two, and catch episode three tonight at 9/8c on Chiller, Channel 257.
What drew you to this project?
The opportunity to work with Aaron Martin again was what first drew me to this project. This is now our third show we have done together. He always writes really round, full characters. The second thing that drew me to this project was the genre. I haven’t done a horror piece in some time, and it’s great to be the first original series on a network.
Can you tell us a bit about your character and what drives them?
Dylan Bennett is a journalist who is extremely ambitious. It’s his ambition that drives him and what ultimately may lead to his undoing. He has to balance his ambitions with the love for his wife, Sarah, which at times seems in direct opposition with one another.
What are you most excited about viewers discovering in Slasher?
I’m really excited for the viewers to be introduced to the crazy band of characters that Aaron Martin dreamt up to live in this small, odd town called Waterbury. It truly is a good old fashioned horror piece.
What did you find most challenging about your role and what did you enjoy most about it?
What was interesting about this role is that it was my first role without my dreadlocks. That was a fascinating journey—learning to be without them and we had such a great cast and tremendous crew.
What do you think the show uniquely offers viewers that sets it apart from others?
The show uses horror as a backdrop, but what makes Slasher great and unique is that it really is about the characters and not about the gore. My hope is that viewers will empathize, root for or root against, become invested in all of these people, and have some good screams in the process.
