We’ve got a need for speed, and luckily Top Gear is back with a brand new season this Memorial Day weekend! We spoke with Rory Reid, a brand new addition to this season’s cast, about his passion for cars and what kind of content viewers can expect to see during his show Extra Gear. Make sure to set your DVR for the premiere of Top Gear on BBC America (Ch. 264) on Monday, May 30th at 9/8c, and keep watching to catch the premiere of Extra Gear which airs immediately after at 10:30/9:30c.
When did your passion for cars begin? Were you a gearhead from birth?
My passion for cars began when I was 9. I bought a car magazine that had these incredible posters of super cars inside it, and I put the poster up on my wall and thought to myself “one day I’m going to own a car like that!” My favorite was definitely the Chevy Corvette.
What’s been the most exciting part of joining the team at Top Gear, and what can viewers expect from Extra Gear?
Before I joined the team I was making car videos on my own anyway, but the best part of joining Top Gear has been being able to make these videos at a much larger scale. I’m doing what I love in these beautiful locations, and with the best equipment possible so it’s been an absolute delight.
Extra Gear is basically bonus Top Gear—we’re getting into the additional things that happen on location that may not be part of the script! So it’s a lot of behind the scenes footage. You know often times getting into these incredible machines stirs up a lot of emotions that are unscripted, so Extra Gear is a great place for these moments to come to light.
We get to showcase more of the relationships we have with presenters—they welcome us into their homes and I get a chance to really spend time with them. We also present the news as well, so we’ll talk about all the breaking information around new vehicles, etc.
You’ve been able to get behind the wheel of countless incredible machines, but what’s your ultimate dream car?
When we had Chris Evans on the show he handed over the keys to his Ferrari LaFerrari—I turned to him and said “You do realize I’m going to drive this thing right?” And he let me! I mean, it’s a 1.5 million pound car, I couldn’t believe it. It’s definitely my ultimate dream car!
If you could design a vehicle from scratch, what kind of car would it be and what would be the design element that makes it stand apart from the crowd?
I would design a family car, but I would want to make it as cool as possible so it would be a hybrid, but it would need to have speed. I’d want it to have a v12 engine! It doesn’t make sense really, but I’d want it to have room for 7 people and still be the coolest car on the block.
What are you most excited for viewers to see in the new season?
The quality of the visuals in the show is just incredible—that coupled with the energy that jumps off the screen at you is a winning combination. I want viewers to feel that excitement, and I want to share these incredible moments with them!
