Imagine a world in which illnesses have been eliminated, and world peace is the norm. Sounds great right? But here’s the catch—human emotions have also been eradicated. That’s the strange futuristic society that director Drake Doremus created in his film Equals, starring Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart. Check out our quick chat with Doremus and a teaser of the film below, and make sure to watch Equals available exclusively on DIRECTV CINEMA® (through 6/29) before it hits theaters in limited release on July 15th!
Tell us a little about your inspiration for making this film?
I really wanted to try and do something different. I wanted to push myself into a place that was scary, and into a backdrop that would serve as an interesting world for me to continue to explore love stories.
In your opinion, what separates the best Science Fiction from more mediocre efforts?
Coldness. I love it when the genre is super warm and emotional.
Is it important to you that a Science Fiction film contains an allegory for its audience?
I suppose so, yes. I think a strong emotional story is really important.
What are some of your favorite Science Fiction films to date?
Definitely Fahrenheit 451 and Blade Runner.
What was it like working with Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult?
Awesome! They were both so committed to my process, and they really embraced the improvisational element too which I am so grateful for!
