Inspired by a 2010 Australian film bearing the same name, TNT’s Animal Kingdom isn’t for the faint of heart. The Cody family is tough as nails, and involved in tons of illegal activities and questionable behavior—and as a viewer you get to ride shotgun through it all. We caught up with Animal Kingdom star Ben Robson before the show premiered, to find out just what kind of craziness viewers could expect. We’re only 5 episodes into the season, so with 5 more to go who knows what other surprises are on the horizon. Make sure to catch up on all the episodes you may have missed, and set your DVR for new episodes of Animal Kingdom on Tuesdays at 9/8c on TNT (Ch. 245).
Tell us about your character and how he fits into the family dynamic.
I play Craig, who is the middle child of the family, sort of a wild child. He’s an adrenalin junkie—his drugs are motor bikes and sex. He’s very proud that he acts before he thinks, so he’s been really, really fun to play. You never really know what’s going to happen with him—each brother definitely fulfills a different type of role within the family.
Does anyone bring the ax down on you when you misbehave?
Yeah, Mommy. Ellen Barkin. She’s brings it down, but I think all the brothers are vying for her attention—not only as a mother but as a boss. It’s really an interesting dynamic when you have that many hot-blooded males vying for it. It makes it quite interesting.
So what can viewers expect during this first season?
Everything! I mean, the unexpected to a certain degree, but there are definitely exciting story lines. In terms of how everything works out with the family—these matters are very complicated. There’s a lot of camaraderie, but with that many boys we’re getting into a lot of trouble at the same time.
There’s a real sense of family on and off screen with the cast—did you guys gel instantly?
Yeah, I think we did because we were thrown into such crazy moments while filming the show. Everyone gets on really, really well and we really do have a good time. We get to do all these fun things, and I get to ride motor bikes and surf a lot. So it’s been a lot of fun, and in the process we definitely bonded pretty quickly.
